New in 2024 we are offering mini-workshops! The mini-workshops give students a taste of blacksmithing with a project that is designed to take less time than our large project workshops. Each mini will let students make a small item that allows them to dip their toes into the art of blacksmithing. In July Mini-Workshop Students will make hoof pick.
Forge a connection with the past in our 1902 blacksmith shop!
Our blacksmith workshop series is back for another year. Each workshop will give students hands-on experience working with our coal forge to complete their project, this project focuses on the creation of a hoof pick. Students will learn how to work safely in a blacksmith shop and manipulate metal to achieve the shapes required for their project.
Participants in our blacksmith shop workshops must be 16 or older. All participants will be required to sign a safety waiver at the beginning of class.
Though participants do not need to bring their own tools or safety equipment they are required to wear or bring the following:
- natural fibre clothing (cotton, wool, linen – synthetic fibres can melt when close to the forge)
- work boots – we do not require steel-toe boots but sturdy boots that will keep you safe against dropped items are a must
- Long hair should be tied back
- do not wear flammable products like hairspray
- optional safety equipment: safety glasses, ear plugs, leather gloves
