Bring out your stones! (and bones!) Have you ever found an interesting rock, a potential fossil, an arrowhead or other projectile points and wanted to learn more about it? That is what a Stones and Bones is all about! Archaeologists and paleontologists will be joining the Lacombe Museum during Lacombe Days to teach us more about Alberta’s past, and to identify your stones and bones.

The Archaeological Society of Alberta – Red Deer Center promotes public awareness of the Alberta Historical Resources Act and archaeology in Alberta with our winter “Speaker series” and other public events, like “Stones and Bones”. A “Stones and Bones” event invites Albertans to share their fossils and archaeological finds with experts in Paleontology (fossils) and archaeological (human-made) artifacts.

For this event, you are invited to bring your finds in to be identified by scientists with the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM). We are very pleased to be supported in hosting this event by Kyle Forsythe and his team, as well as the Lacombe Museum for inviting us.

You should also bring any helpful information with you, like when and where the object was found, site pictures and GPS coordinates are very helpful.

If you can’t make it to Lacombe on July 15th but have found an artifact you are encouraged to report it at https://www.alberta.ca/report-archaeological-find.aspx. If you have found a fossil, you can report it to the Royal Tyrrell Museum at https://tyrrellmuseum.com/research/found_a_fossil

Please remember that a permit is required to dig at an archaeological site and that these types of excavations must be done by a qualified expert to preserve the context in which objects are found
